What is C.U.R.B.?
Citizens United to Remove Barriers (C.U.R.B.) is a local, non-profit 501c3 organization founded by Jim Conlon of Long Beach. Conlon started a one-man campaign to bring curb cuts to Long Beach. His persistence in front of the city council eventually brought curb cuts to the center of town. With his cause attracting followers, the cuts eventually spread to every street corner in Long Beach. At the time, Long Beach was the only municipality in the state to install the cuts. Conlon's efforts through C.U.R.B. have changed the face of Long Beach. Ramps now make the beach accessible to wheelchairs, and local businesses began making themselves accessible even before the Americans with Disabilities Act came to be. Conlon's activism was a driving force behind the repaving of Ocean View in 2001, and people now take note of the new name, Jim Conlon Way. Together, with former co-president Jim Monahan, the two have shaped the organization to what it stands for today. 2016 marked the first year the ride was held in memory of both men.
Citizens United to Remove Barriers gives the physically challenged a chance to live a life free of barriers. Funding is provided for wheelchair ramps and lifts in and around the homes of those in need. The organization's primary mission is to provide concrete solutions to removing barriers which prevent participation in community life. After an onsite home visit, C.U.R.B. attempts to remediate the barrier. As they work to remove architectural barriers, they bring awareness to attitudinal barriers and the concerns of the physically challenged community. These are the cornerstones of C.U.R.B.'s mission.
